Happy New Year to you! After a beautiful summer break we are just about to start 2023 with a wonderful family and friend friendly Rotary Fun-draiser courtesy of our Vocational committee members. The venue is the Maribyrnong Park Bowls Club, 195 Holmes Rd, Moonee Ponds, VIC, 3039. It is a familiar venue to many of us who have over recent years joining in our fun barefoot bowls events at which time we quickly realised that our thoughts that lawn bowls looked easy soon discovered that we were sorely mistaken. This time on Tuesday 7th February we are going to join in a super dooper supper night with all three courses being cooked by our very own celebrity chefs of the Vocational Committee. The wonderful guest speaker for the evening is Peter Bellion. Peter has a diverse and interesting background heading up the Reconstructive Road Trauma unit with Victoria Police for over 30 years. You may remember him as the Seargent heading up the ‘Wipe off 5’ campaign. He is also the President of the Port Melbourne Life Saving Club whom were recently titled with ‘Life Saving Club of the Year.’ Not only does the club teach hundreds of children how to safety enjoy the bay for four months of the year, and provide surf rescue crew volunteers to keep our swimmers safe, but also help refugee and school groups understand the challenges of swimming in the ocean. He has many entertaining anecdotes of life saving feats in the bay. Additional to this, he is an avid speaker on Mental Health, having suffered from PTSD himself after attending over 2000 road traumas. He has many interesting solutions to talk about including the use of dogs in therapy. Peter is both entertaining and engaging and has some incredible stories about helping people and groups. There will be some fun games and activities to enjoy and raise some much needed funds for our club's projects, so bring along your moneybox filled with gold coins to join in. So please use the link to register you, your family, including the kids, and friends for this great night. |

Presentator Dr Nicole Kowalczyk (Ecologist, Maribyrnong Officer/Education Manager MCC) who will make a presentation on the Care and development of the Maribyrnong River. “One of Dr Kowalczyk’s aims is to lobby the state government to introduce a Maribyrnong River Protection Act, which would make authorities more accountable for actions that affect the river…it would provide a framework to improve practices such as pollution management and greater environmental flows, and would bring Indigenous people into decision making.” (Read the full article by the Age here. )
We look forward to supporting efforts to protect and care for the Maribyrnong and welcome collaboration with the community, local governments and friends of groups in the area. For any enquiries please email info@yarrariver.org.au
